Our Visit To Okinawa in 2017

Okinawa – birthplace of Karatedô and Kobudô – subtropical island with Japanese and Chinese flair and a hue of Hawaii. Whatever aspect means more to one, it is always worth being explored. Under the guidance of Frank Pelny, the technical director of the Ryûkyû Kobudô Tesshinkan Kyô Kai in Germany and Europe, a German group travelled to Okinawa in April 2017 to learn and practice directly at the roots. Our teacher, Tamayose Hidemi, 10th Dan and Hanshi, is the president of the Ryûkyû Kobudô Tesshinkan, vice-president of the Okinawa Ken Kobudô Renmei and a member of the Okinawa Ken Karatedô Renmei. Thus, he is amongst the highest-ranking and well-known teachers in Okinawa.

Tesshinkan Europe-Gasshuku 2016

Every year since 2011 Tamayose Hidemi Hanshi has come to Nordhausen to teach his style of Kobudô. Every year? Almost every year. Last year we were unfortunate and could not visit him in Nordhausen, for he was quite busy organising the 1st Kobudô World Championship on Okinawa. Thus sadly the camp had to be hosted without our Sensei. But that did not hinder us from visiting him one week later. That, however, is a different, but happy story.

But this year everything was back to normal: Tamayose Sensei – accompanied by his lovely wife Masako-san – came to Nordhausen once again, to that small town lying at the feet of the Harz mountains. This year the Karate club of Nordhausen would host a tenth-degree black belt from Okinawa for the very first time: In december 2015 Tamayose Sensei was awarded 10th Dan, and thus he is one of only a handful who have ever got that rank in Kobudô.
